The Project

The Lenape Mural Project started as an idea to paint a mural to celebrate sustainable community. Our blank canvas is the 16 foot high north wall of the Paddle Creek Kayak building at the gateway to Frenchtown at Route 12. Inspired by the murals of John Pugh, we conceived of a way to create a porthole back in time to show us the original inhabitants of our river valley, the Lenni Lenape Indians.

The mural has grown into a project designed to heal the shortfall in funding for our local school. With the sponsorship of the Frenchtown Business & Professional Assoc., we initiated a fundraiser to support the mural, naming the Frenchtown Elementary School‘s Art & Music Program as beneficiary of all monies raised exceeding our costs.

In addition, we have created a line of signed, limited edition giclee prints from the original maquette for the mural that are available for purchase. Twenty percent of all profits on prints and some merchandise benefit the Frenchtown Elementary SchoolArt & Music Program. Five percent of all profits go in support of the Frenchtown Business & Professional Assoc.

  1. I would like to correct your impression that the Lenape village at Waterloo is “Defunct”. Far from it!! A magnificent rebirth occurred this year as “Winakung at Waterloo” entertained more than 3,000 visitors to a reopened and refreshed Lenape Village. I would like to direct you to the website
http://winakungatwaterloo.com/ for current information on this marvelous Lenape Village.
